SLOBs Board Application
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a parent need to apply with their student for a SLOBs Board Position? Isn’t this a student organization?
SLOBs is a parent-son organization. The SLOBs Bylaws state that “The mission of NCHS SLOBs is for parents and sons to initiate and promote educational and charitable endeavors that foster community responsibility and leadership, as well as strengthen the parent-son relationship.”
Is the parent or the student more involved with the work of serving on the board?
Serving in a SLOBs board position requires both the parent and the student to attend their respective board meetings and to jointly execute the duties and responsibilities of the board position. The SLOBs Board works with over 50 philanthropic organizations to help out with hundreds of events over the year; must respond to numerous new requests; manages a membership of 200+ students and their respective parents; organizes 5 general meetings a year; and maintains a Track It Forward account, a mail chimp account for weekly newsletters, a bank account, a website, and an Instagram and Facebook page. The success of SLOBs requires the leadership, organization, and participation of both the parent and student serving on the SLOBs Board. Both parent and student will gain invaluable insight and experience into how a large organization and board runs and operates.
Can anyone apply for a Board Position?
Any SLOBs member in good standing who has served at least once as a Philanthropy Liaison may apply for a board position. To be in good standing, both student and parent must have completed all required philanthropy hours from the previous year(s) and must have completed at least half the required service hours for the current year.
How do I choose which Board Positions to apply for?
We encourage you to read through the SLOBs Board Job Descriptions and reach out to any of the current board members—both parent and student—to find out which positions you feel are the best fit. You will have to indicate a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice on your application.
How do you choose who serves on the Board?
A Nominating Committee representing all 4 grades will read all the applications. They will also consider the number of philanthropy hours served previously, your philanthropy liaison work, and your attendance at general meetings. It is important to note that the online applications from both the parent and the student are equally important. The goal of the Nominating Committee is to choose a Board that will ensure the continued success of the SLOBs organization. Applications will be read with names removed. The board positions will be determined by majority vote cast anonymously by each member of the Nominating Committee.
